Monday Spring Fishing Report #1

The Pike Run Is On!

If you want to experience some ‘every cast’ pike fishing from shore, now is the time to get out there and do it.  The Pike are running hot and heavy on many of the bridges and coulee spots closer to the lake.

Many of the further North spots are still too muddied up and the current is still pretty brisk, but in a lot of locations closer to the lake where the majority of the Spring run-off has not reached yet, the Pike fishing is phenomenal.

The only gear you needs is right here:

Locations to Focus On

The majority of the Walleyes coming out are from Location #1 and Location #94.  The run will begin soon but until then, the Pike action is heating up, to locate those pike, you can find them at locations 3-7, 20-27, 56-66, 70-72, 87 and 88, 102-106, and 108.  For the majority of the other locations on our Devils Lake Basin Shore Fishing Guide, either the fish haven’t traveled that far yet, the current is still to violent, or the water is way too muddied up.

Bisbee damn is really pouring out of the spillway right now so we predict that the brisk current in the northern end is going to persist for a little while longer.  When it subsides, the fishing will really pick up.

There are some Walleyes being caught and word reached us that a 13+ pounder was landed this weekend.

The better Walleye fishing is up in the channels adjacent to the lake and you will have better Walleye luck if you have a duck boat or smaller ditch dumper that you can use to get further out into the channels.

Either way, there is some great fishing to be had as we speak.

My Alternative Weekend Activity

We had the chance this weekend to chase a different kind of game and when this opportunity arises, we will always take it.

I speak of the ‘White Devil’ of course, and the farm was holding quite a few birds.  With a brisk wind forecast and some new gear to test out, we played in the mud a little on Sunday and had a blast.

My new toy I just had to give a test run to!

We didn’t lay the smack down on em, but we had a lot of groups work us and the Canada, Speckle Belly, and Duck show was worth the price of admission.

It was a muddy one and decoy set up and take down made it so that I got my weekend work out in times 10.

Pest Control

My mother has had some late night visitors that have wreaked havoc with her cats, and garbage, and cat food.  I have had a hate-hate relationship with these critters and there is a long story that goes along with it which we will share with you this week.  Needless to say, sweet revenge was had this weekend.

Oh, the sweet smell of spring!

Good Luck out there!

  1. We are coming from Montana near Billings… kind of a long trip…. wondering about fishing Walleye from shore……. actually about timing. What is your best estimate of a time it would be worth the trip. Not interested in pike… lots available right here. Thanks… and how do I find your booking information for guided trips this summer. Thanks again for a good site and offering food information.
