Report 5: It’s Tournament Time on Devils Lake!

Fishing tournament weekend on Devils Lake, busy water this week and this weekend. There will be a lot of boats on the water and on some of the best spots on the lake. The Casino tournament usually draws the best of the best from the local fisherman and some from around North Dakota and some surrounding states. However, just because there is a surge in boat activity doesn’t mean there aren’t excellent fishing activities to be had.

If you have a 16-foot or under boat with a smaller motor on it, I cannot express to you the significance of the opportunity you have of going into the northern feeder lakes and pitching, slip-bobber fishing, and trolling for outstanding northern pike and Walleye action. Thursday, the 9th found us out on one of these lakes at 7 p.m., an hour and 25 minutes later we were pulling lines and heading for the ditch, literally. Largest was 24, smallest, 17.5 and the number of pike hits and follows was astounding.

Weeds again were the key. Pitching Scatter raps and Scatter countdowns into the weed line and pulling spinners on the outside in 6 feet of water was the ticket again. Leeches on the spinners as I believe and most agree that it is a little early for worms yet.

The water on Devils Lake itself continues to rise and I would not dismiss attacking some of the shallow bays that litter Devils Lake.
