Report 6: Casino Tourney and 25 inch Release

Congratulations to Travis Klein and Rick Frisch, good guys and good fisherman. Hot crank bites can be wonderful, and when you are on pods of big fish they can make for some impressive bag weights. 54.86 pounds over two days with less than ideal weather on Sunday is quite a feat on any water outside of Lake Erie. Good work gentlemen,

Again, the mention of weather, the old saying up here on the northern tier that is Devils Lake is “if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes, it’ll change”. How true that is, we had quite a few systems move through over the past week with rain, wind, cooler temps followed by sun and heat, then more wind. This all affects the bite on a day to day basis. The ironic thing about the Big Devil right now is that through all of these weather changes, the walleyes are still biting you just have to adjust to the conditions.

Last week just before the majority of the fronts came through Devils Lake we found the fish both pitching really shallow and trolling spinners in 6-7 feet. Sunday found us struggling initially trying to find that crank bite in shallow, but muddy, churned up water forced us to adjust to just spinners and leeches, once we did this it was game over, walleye after walleye with one catch and release over 25 inches.

Water temps on the water we were on had dropped to 67.3 degrees Sunday, this along with the muddy water caused the preference for live bait and spinners in my opinion. Yesterday saw a strong slip bobber and jigging bite in 5 feet of water.

This summer is lining up to be one of the best walleye bites on Devils Lake, if you are planning a fishing trip, get here now. The fish are starting to transition a little bit, the spinner troll bite and the crank bait troll bite are going to get crazy over the next few weeks.
