Report 4: When the Walleye Bite is On

Well, the weekend saw a lot of what an angler hates to see when targeting walleyes on Devils Lake, unstable weather; rain, wind, temperature fluctuations. The ironic thing is, the bite was still on. Pike are still hitting and hitting voraciously. Some of the hits we had from pike just about tore the rod out of our hands.

Usually this time of year the pike bite all day but the walleyes wait for temperature rise and warmer waters before they begin the daily feeding. That brought us to the conclusion to fish the evening bite on Thursday and from last report you read about our success. Saturday gave us the opportunity to test out the morning bite on one of the northern feeder lakes. All’s I can say is WOW.

We targeted wind blown shorelines. Pitching shallow, 2-4 f.o.w., with the boat in 6 feet and dragging bottom bouncers with spinners and leeches along the outside. Thursday the crank bait was king, not so on Saturday. The bottom bouncers and spinners were the key.

The structure where we found the eyes was a factor also. Rocks, mud, and sand bottom meant pike after pike after pike. Weeds were the walleye’s domain. Where we found submerged and emerging weed beds is where we found the eyes. Water temps were still in the low 60’s, as they raise so will the consistency of the bite on the main lake, for now, target those northern feeder lakes and hold on to your rod.

SPECIFIC BAYS and LOCALES: Mike’s Lake, Dry Lake, Chain Lakes, Howard’s Bay, Pelican RR Tracks, North Creel RipRap, New Mil, Knutson’s.
