Sunlight as Opposed to Overcast and Perch Activity Explodes Under the Bright Lights
Our original destination for the weekend was accessible (barley) by full sized truck We got there and do our chagrin, it had been invaded by the dreaded Pike.
We are not Pike enthusiasts, however, if you are here is a Pike-a-Paloosa for you if you want to chase tip-ups all day:
After making a location adjustment from the 18 foot location that was inundated with Pike, we cruised some deeper contours and searched some ledges and found a couple small ledges and cuts with Perch.
They were very docile at first, and grinding on them with bobbers and slow jigging was the only way to even move them.
Then the sun came out and the light switch came on. Christmas Trees and get the lure down there as fast as possible as they turned crazy active. Lots of Medium Large and Large Perch were to be had.
Sunday brought us to a similar location and again the light conditions were the key.
With clouds and low light, this is what one member of our crew was able to manage:
Later in the day, with the periodic sun coming through, this was more the rule:
We were in 29-32 feet of water on an old sunken ledge with a gradual cut on the outside. When the sun was not out, slip bobbers would slowly produce, but when the sun made an appearance it was jigging time.
Gold Varmint and Perch Jigging Raps produced the most fish, followed right behind by Plain hooks with full minnows and slip bobbers.
There is a lot of snow out there and by the time we left both day, there was ample slush on the ice. Make sure your boots are waterproof as it will make for a much more enjoyable day.
There are still Perch being caught in those intermediate 18-25 foot bowl structures around the lake. One at the north end of the towers and one at the south end of the towers both have been producing fish.
There are numerous other bowl structures around the lake and you can find the location of these in our Early Ice Waypoint packages.
We feel, after this weekends excursions that a lot of those intermediate water Perch are getting chased out of those areas by roaming Pike and will be starting to venture deeper.
Thanks for the report will be venturing there on Thursday the 5th.
