Water Fowl Recap- ‘The Year Of The Gadwall’!!

What A Ride!!

Gadwall and Wigeon Galore!

Wow!!

That is about all that I have to say about this year’s Waterfowl season! So many birds, so many young birds, all too willing to decoy. One cannot make any comments without first mentioning…

The Gads!!!

Either the Gadwalls had the most amazing hatch ever, or they just congregated in the prairie pothole region. Never in my like have we had so many gads that just kept coming and kept coming.

The Wigeon were plentiful as well and many days, that is about all that we shot until later in the season. With the dry conditions this spring, most of the mallards ended up nesting much further north and just took some time to get here to the Northern Tier of North Dakota. In the meantime, we were kept occupied by all those ‘Scads of Gads’!!

The Mallards did eventually show up in full force and out late season was just about as amazing as out early and mid. The wheat harvest was very early this year and almost all of our hunts, aside from a couple of early one, were held in either soybean or corn fields. Aside from my 1st 2 hunts, my guide season was all in soybeans or corn.

I would like to thank Kyle and Spider, my two outfitters, for allowing me to continue guiding in the Duck Factory of North Dakota. Along with that, my fellow guide, Eric, Johnny, Warren, Devan, Landon, Alex, and Remmy; there is no group of guys that I would rather run with, you guys are awesome!

To all of our clients that I shared the spread with, thank you! It was a blast to host you in the field, some great shooters in this group and I look forward to many more years to come.

After last year, I didn’t know how this year was going to shake out. The doom and gloom from many hatch reports had nesting numbers really low and the dry conditions that we had for the Spring, and the first part of the Summer had us all very concerned. And then the late summer/early fall rains came, and we were pretty much flooded for the duration of our season.

When it was all said and done, I ended up having a better season than 2024, and I didn’t think that that was possible. Over 1300 Ducks and Geese for the season…

Unreal!!

I might have 1 more day in me before we are done for the Waterfowl season, and then it is on to Ice!!

Stay tuned over the next few days for some Thanksgiving Weekend offers for you 2025-2026 Ice Season!!

Good Luck out there!
