Wednesday Weekly Ice Conditions: Act 2!

Slower Than Expected!

Night Time Temps Are Gonna Help

At first glance it will look like a great situation, but the story the picture doesn’t tell is that a week ago this very spot had 6 inches of ice.  Today, 8 inches of ice with approximately 6-7 inches of snow on top, after 15 minutes on this hole I was in a circle of slush.  Now, this area is very sheltered and the wind didn’t blow off the lake like it did in many areas.  The concerning part for me was, even with temperatures well below freezing, below zero even, this spot only gained 2 inches of ice.

We ARE making ice, just very slowly.  Also, many of the sheltered areas of the lake are going to be troublesome.  We ventured out to an area that was too thin to walk on a week ago and 15 paces out we found 8 inches, 15 steps later we found 7, and then 15 steps further out we found 5; we were solo so we didn’t venture any further.

Lucky For Us!

The temperature lows over the next 10 days looks like this:

  1. 12-8: 17
  2. 12-9: 11
  3. 12-10: 9
  4. 12-11: 25
  5. 12-12: 20
  6. 12-13: 20
  7. 12-14: 23
  8. 12-15: 12
  9. 12-16: 4
  10. 12-17: 4

We have 3 really good ice making nights and then 4 nights of, while freezing, not low like we want.  Then 3 more days of really good ice making nights to follow.  While we definitely won’t be driving trucks before Christmas, we should have a hope of driving ATV’s by then and then SnoBears and Trucks to follow shortly after.

Good Luck out there!

  1. On our way to Devils Lake from Southern Wisconsin, what kind of ice is on Black Tiger Bay?
    Pelican Nay?
    Lake Alice?
    Lake Erving?
