Wednesday Weekly Ice Conditions: Episode 6- December 13th

Slow But Sure, Adding To That Ice Sheet!

Slow but steady wins the race, and our ice production right now is very slow and steady.  Those spots that were frozen over early and got a good early foundation are getting into that double digit area.  Problem is, most parts of the main lake did not get that early freeze and therefore are pretty much inaccessible at this time.

Places that we know still have open water areas are:

  1. Creel Bay
  2. Main Bay
  3. The Flats
  4. Six Mile Bay
  5. East Bay
  6. East Devils Lake

There are even still some problem areas up on Lake Alice and Lake Irvine so one has to be carefull and be aware that there is not uniform ice all over.  The above photo was taken on one of the early freeze areas on North 6 Mile Bay.  A good 10 inches of clear ice.

We do know that there are cracks on many areas that are bleeding water and even got a report of a 4-wheeler going over a crack on Irvine and water erupted out of it.  That can be a very dangerous situation.

Not Much Hope This Week, Ice Making Weather Next Week!

The forecast the rest of this week doesn’t include much for ice making temperatures, however, we will see a massive cold stretch next week.  We need those winds to die though in order to solidify those open areas so that we can really start making some ice.  If you plan a trip over the next few days, at least, plan on either being on foot or being very cautious and drill as you go on a UTV.

We will bring you that hopeful forecast and NEW MOON report tomorrow.

Good Luck Out There!
