Wednesday Weekly Ice Conditions: Episode 3

ALL ICE IS NOT SAFE ICE

Case in point- The open water in the ice was approximately 20 yards away from this 7 inch thick Ice Hole.

We found 5 of these open water spots on the North end of 6 Mile Bay over the last 2 days.  Make sure to use caution even if you are on what you believe to be good solid ice.  Looks can be deceiving.

Many parts of the main lake have only just frozen over.  In the mean time, Lake Alice is registering right around 8-9 inches.  Lake Irvine, which was the first to freeze, has spots of 12 but the last report in to us was that there are numerous pressure ridges popping up all over Lake Irvine.  We hope to have pictures of it for you tomorrow.

Many will start to venture out onto many parts of the Main Lake over this holiday weekend.  We want everyone to remain safe.  Travel in pairs and have ice picks and rope along with.  No fish is worth a life.

While we were out on the ice, we did have time to nab a few of these:

  1. Good comments Travis. I’ve seen a couple of guides encouraging fishing when we should be encouraging caution at this point. Pressure ridges can get real sketchy with only single digit ice. Going out alone with our present ice is ill advised.
