Fishing Report, Ice Fishing

Wednesday Weekly Ice Conditions: Episode 4

The feature photo was taken today on the parking lot of the Marina at Woodland Resort.  Many areas of open water have appeared in the mouth of Creel between Rocky and Military Points!!

Patience, It’s Early, Ice Production Coming Next Week!!

Our first days on the water a year ago were the 3rd and 4th of December, so, to say it is early to be on the ice is an understatement.  The early cold snap we had in November was great for Ice Addicts.  With temperatures returning to more seasonable level and even a little above, one must use a level head.

Are there waters around the area that still have fishable ice?

Sure are!

Is EVERY body of water that has ice on it right now safe to go onto?

Absolutely Not!!!!!

4 inches of soft chunky ice, 20 yards off shore, on Creel Bay.

Many of those 1st freeze, smaller bodies of water are good and have anywhere from 5-9 inches of ice on them.  However, some of those same waters have opened back up in the last 7 days and the heating and cooling of the ice sheets on some of those waters has  caused the ice sheet to become suspect.

3 Rules To Follow

If you’re hell bent on going, please follow these 3 rules so that we don’t have to hear about you in the news:

  1. Never go alone, always travel in at least pairs.
  2. Always have Ice Picks and a Rope along.
  3. Let someone who is not with know where, when, and when you should return.
Bud Bay, 2 spots of open water visible to the left of the 5th and 6th tower and to the right of the 4th, corner, tower!

The Main Lake

For the time being, we are staying off of the Main Lake.  Just too much inconsistency in that ice.  There are parts on the Main Bay and even East Bay that are still open, geese and ducks have been keeping pockets open, and until we have at least 3 nights of well below freezing temperatures; we will stick to smaller waters that we know are good to go.

East Bay behind Pop’s, That dark blue line is a lot of open water!

Not All Bad News

There is good news on the horizon!

The weather forecast, which we will bring you tomorrow, has great news for the ice fishermen next week.  We may still be driving on some bodies before Christmas if some of those forecasts hold true.

Good Luck Out There!
