What Do You Think
Two questions for our Friday Forum today. We go back and forth on both of them. I’ll pose the question and then tell you what I think and why I chose that option. You can tell us if we are right, wrong, or just different and why.
QUESTION #1:
While pitching into the shallows and weed lines for Walleyes, what is your preferred weapon of choice?
A) Spinning Combo w/Crankbait
B) Spinning Combo w/Jig and Plastics
C) Baitcaster w/Crankbait
D) Baitcaster w/Jig and Plastics
E) Other
I prefer A. I grew up with a spinning combo in my hand and that is really the only rod I had as a kid. (Well, besides a Zebco when I was really young but does that really count?) Crank baits are my choice because, again, it is what I have always used for pitching. Sometimes I get stuck in a rut of going back to the same old same old. Cranks on a spinning combo though, has been successful for me. Have there been days when I struggled and couldn’t get the fish to go?
Absolutely!
Had I switched to plastics, would that have changed the outcome?
Possibly.
Even as recently as Wednesday, I had a lot of follows and couldn’t get the fish to seal the deal. I contemplate if I had changed to plastics if they would have hit the jig on the drop. I guess I’ll never know but it is something to think about for next time.
What's your call on Question #1?
Question #2:
While trolling, are you a bottom bouncer and spinners guy/gal, or do you speed things up a little and get after it with a crank bait on the long line, or are you a heavy line guy/gal that favors lead core and the precision of colored line?
A) Bottom Bouncers and Spinners
B) Spinning Combo w/Cranks and long line
C) Line counter reel w/Cranks and long line
D) Line Counter w/Lead Core and Cranks
I am torn on this one. A and D are my two weapons of choice for this application and there is really on one reason:
PERCH!
Trolling with bottom bouncers and spinners gives me the best possibe chance at popping some Devils Lake Gold. As the season gets longer in the tooth, the Perch go deeper and get more aggressive and the bigger ones can be fooled with Salmos on lead core.
I’m a Perch guy, always will be.
What's your call on Question #2
Weather Effected Short Trip
Had my kids out with us today and we got a late start, we also ran into some high winds and instead of souring them towards a day on the water, we decided to cut it short. We were still able to boat a couple fish and see a few follow ups before the wind really picked up and an approaching storm pushed us to head in.
And we end today’s post with a kiss, courtesy of my son!
Good Luck Out There!
