More Snow Leaves No Doubt- Need Tracks
With the additional snow we received on Tuesday, there is no doubt that if you are planning a trip to Devils Lake to ice fish, tracks are a necessity to get around and be at all mobile. There are a few plowed trails on Creel Bay by Woodland Resort but aside from those there aren’t really any anywhere else.
Stump Lake remains one area where, if you are not in possession of a tracked vehicle, you can still get around but chains wouldn’t be a bad idea. One of our contributing members got slushed in Sunday and took a pull to get out after an hour of shoveling.
We don’t want anyones day to be ruined by the same episode.
Some Benefits To The Cold Snap
We are starting to see some further ice production. We are getting into that 26-28 inch range in a lot of areas so it is looking good for the long term duration of our Ice Fishing season. Most of the slushy areas have firmed up, -20 temps last night and negative teens tonight will further eradicate some of the slush issues.
After tomorrow the warm up is on the way and this weekend sees Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with temperatures above freezing. We look for fishing to really pick up from here on out.
Good Reports
As recently as yesterday we got some GREAT reports on some Perch and Crappie bites even through this cold snap so the fish are biting, it may take a few holes to find em but there are there for the taking if you are willing to do a little work.

I would think that if you are careful to avoid slush pockets and the bigger drifts you should be ok, it is 41 degrees here right now and those drifts are going to soften up quite a bit over the next 48 hours.
How long do you suppose the resorts will be ice fishing this year
We are currently sitting at about 28-30 inches of ice, I would think, barring a massive warm up of epic proportions, they will be fishing right up until March 15th when the Game and Fish mandates that permanent ice houses must be off the lake. I would say that the only thing stopping them would be a deterioration of the shorelines.
