You Could Say We Had A Bug Hatch!

Non-Biting Midge Fly To Be Exact

AKA Lake Flies

I caught one of the worst cases of a Walleye with Sand Flesh today that I have ever seen. It was absolutely riddles with it. It is actually called ‘myofibrogranuloma’ and is, according to Google:

from a rare degenerative muscle disease that causes mineral deposits and knotted muscle tissue.

The cause is unknown and more than likely genetic.

Is it safe to eat?

No way am I eating a filet that looks like that. Crappy part is, there is no way to know that a fish is going to have it until you filet it.

This morning’s T-Storm was kind of a bummer. Was up early ready to go and then had to wait. Got on the water to a swarm of Non-Biting Midge flies. They don’t bite, but boy are then annoying, and the fish love them. They are the result of blood worms hatching, coming to the surface and emerging as their adult form. Sometimes they can enhance a bite, sometimes they can shut it down.

The fish will just gorge on them until there is no reason for them to eat anymore. I expect to have a swarm of them tomorrow again as well.

We did find two areas that had fish in them, saw a lot of Pike both following up and on our hooks, only managed 3 Walleyes, one of which was not edible, 4 Pike that we kept.

I had so many short bites today, just one good thump then just nothing. They wouldn’t latch on and there is nothing that is more frustrating than POP-GONE!!

Just about 10 feet of water with the boat, pitching into 5-6.

Back at it tomorrow.

Good Luck out there!
