Not Many Braved the Sub-Arctic Temps
I hate being gone with the onset of ice fishing and the early stages of the season. However, this weekend sized up to be a challenge for anyone that wanted to venture out on the ice with the extreme cold and the unsureness of how thick the ice had gotten.
I had the opportunity to attend the Vikings-Colt game and to see USBank Stadium first hand.
What an experience. Yeah, yeah, they got crushed, but HOLY COW, what a place. I look forward to many return visits and ,hopefully one day, maybe even a playoff game, if they ever get back there.
We did have some boys that were abe to venture out and we have a couple pretty good Waypoints from the northern feeder lakes for you.
With Christmas Break and driving ice occurring at about the same time, we look to be getting you a lot of information over the next 12-14 days.
Make sure you check in, as over this Holiday break, we will be posting Waypoints as soon as we find fish.
This weekend’s fish were caught in 7-8 feet of water on the breaks of the island, alternating between shallower and deeper aspects of 2 of the islands.
1/4 ounce Blade Baits and Rapala’s Slab Rap in UV were the ticket. It wasn’t fast and furious but the quality of fish is still there.
When venturing our onto the ice for the first couple times, I suggest drilling test holes out until you are confident the ice is uniform.
Early Ice usually means shallow water and structure for Walleyes; Depressions, Trees, and intermediate water for Perch. Drill the majority of your morning hole sets on and around structure for the Walleye Golden Hour.
Concentrate on any flooded sloughs or old coulee channels during the mid morning and early afternoon hours for your Perch hole sets and then return to your Walleye structure about 2:30/3:00 for the evening Walleye Golden Hour.
That is how we attack the Early Ice and we assure you that it will be productive>
