The Week That Was
Almost’s And Just About’s
We were to the east today and we found some biters early and late, just not much in between. Shallow and then really deep, just over 20 and then over 30 feet of water. Some perch pods were coming through late, and we picked off a few here and there with buckshots and minnow heads. There aren’t fish everywhere over there, but when you find them, they come through in pretty regular intervals and sitting and grinding seems to be the best strategy, the tough part is finding the initial corridor where they are transiting through.
To The South
Yesterday, we were to the far south of the fishery, and we found oodles and oodles of fish, even some big girls. Sadly, we were a couple days like on the Perch bite, they were still there, just a lot of non-biters and very negative. That’s what happens when you take a day off, sometimes you miss a bite, but our sanity needs to be restored too!! This area is over 40 feet of water, and the Walleyes and Perch were pretty much mixed together, with the Big Eyes chasing the Perch around.
That Western Edge
I have a love/hate relationship with the western edge of the fishery. When it is ‘on’ it can be lights out, when it is ‘off’ it is painful. Friday was one of those ‘off’ days as we marked so many fish that just wouldn’t bite. Scrambling to get six might have just been a blessing. This area is soon to be inaccessible due to the landing; I can’t say that I am all too sad.
Ole Favorite Haunts
In the middle of this last week, we had 3 search days to just go out and fish for enjoyment and trying to find something. This time of year, as evidenced by the Crappie, I think most know where we were at. Needless to say, we did not find much, but did almost get a Super Slam out of it; just missing that pesky pike. Whether it is just too early for this area, or the fish just aren’t there is up to debate. Once out guide schedule is complete, we plan to hit this area pretty hard, all the way up until we can’t get out on the ice anymore.
The Western Edge Revisited
Then there are days like these on that Western edge, days when you can’t do anything wrong. Less than 15 feet of water and everywhere we went we caught Walleyes.
Good Luck out there!
