Hammered Silver Was Our Only Salvation!
The Where!
We were East today, as we never want to work just one section of the lake too much. We had a narrow window with having to run kids around to different activities and the higher winds kept us in sheltered areas. That old shoreline, white line is still playing a factor in where we are starting our searches.
The How Deep!
A general rule of thumb right now is 15-25. Depending on the time of day and the wind direction, you are going to be able to catch most of your limit of fish in that 10-foot depth range. Some days may be a little shallower, some days maybe a little deeper; we are finding the ‘button’ each day within that range though.
Exactly how deep?
Today, East bay, just north of the East bay boat launch on that old shoreline, and 16 feet seemed to be where the active ones were. They were short biting us a lot and we missed quite a few fish.
The How!
Well, spinners behind bottom bouncers of course. Hammered Silver continues to be a pretty ‘go-to’ color that keeps getting fish for us time and time again. Now granted, most days it is Hammered Silver with some type of stripe and today was no different. Two days ago, we got fish on worms and leeches, today they just wanted…
Worms!
Worms!!
The colored Hammered Silver stripe for the days was this flavor:
Water Temps!
Seeing mid-70’s almost all the time and on the hot, hot days even higher. Lake is turning over and getting that green pretty much throughout the fishery.
Water Clarity!
Like we just stated, that signature green that Devils Lake is known for every late-Summer is here and here to stay. It usually doesn’t go away once it sets in and we project it will only get worse, not better. We haven’t seen a whole lot of the pea soup much yet and that is at least a positive. With the influx of new water that will probably come much later than usual and we will probably only see it really bad on dead calm days.
Lake Elevation!
Stabilized now, for the most part. Not a whole lot of major precipitation events to the North and it looks like we will be looking at 1450.5 for the duration of the Summer and will probably freeze up at or just below 1450, barring a huge, 5-inch rain to the North.
Weed Growth!
Starting to pick up weeds on our spinners in that 12-16 foot range causing us to have to check hooks a little more often than we would like. To keep clean spinners, we are just having to slide a little deeper. Most days it works out but sometimes we have to stay in that weed range to catch some bigger fish.
Good Luck out there!
