Getting Better!

Almost A Foot!

Slowly but surely, we are making our way to a foot of ice. We had 11 inches in every hole we drilled today and that is good news. Quite a few spots now are getting to that 1-foot range and a few might be a little bit over that, add to that that we are about to experience a little cold snap and things are looking up for the ice sheet.

The further west you get, the thicker the ice sheet is going to be. There are some nasty pressure ridges out there and for the short term you are going to want to avoid those as much as possible, but we are getting closer to that ‘driving ice’ level. We did see a pick-up on Creel on Sunday and while we wouldn’t attempt that quite yet, there will be some that start doing it, proceed with caution just yet though.

The Bite!

We had a decent bite today, pods of perch would come through and we were able to pick off a few here and there. Not the mother load but enough to keep my guys busy for most of the day. We were under 20 feet of water for the duration of the day and a lot of perch are staying in that shallow zone right now. As the water in the shallows starts to get colder, we expect to start to see more and more of them drifting deeper, but for the short term, focus your searches in under 30 feet of water for the best result.

Shallow perch can be tricky though as they come and go very quickly; here one minute and then just gone as fast as they came in.

Good Luck out there!
