Sunday’s Smackdown!!

Fired Up As Soon As We Got Down!

After frustratingly marking fish after fish after fish yesterday with very few bites, we were going to take today off due to the high wind forecast.  Waking this morning and finding that we had a window of opportunity, we quickly got dressed and headed out.

Boy are we glad we did.

As soon as we dropped down, we had big marks that were flying up.  Those big marks turned out to be some Jumbo’s, and a few really nice Walleyes.  Flooded timber in 19-20 feet of water did the trick and the biggest job was finding openings in the trees that were clear enough to read the Vexilar.

That Feeling When Devils Lake Gold Appears!

Often times, small Walleyes and Jumbo Perch are just about indecipherable on the Vexilar.  Only once that fish comes through the hole can one be sure what they are dealing with.

That moment of truth gets our blood flowing and keeps us coming back for more!

The Wonderbread Buck Shot doing the trick today!

Just look at that signature ‘Devils Lake Jumbo Belly’!

Lures That Won The Day!

All 3 tipped with minnow heads were what got us our fish today.  Both buck shots were in 1/8 ounce and that Purple Weasel was, well, the Weasel with a hammered Silver back!

Our Current Set-Up!

Find And Grind!

When in the shallower flooded timber, finding the right pocket in the trees is crucial in having a successful day.  Once you have zeroed in on the clear spots, we really like our Active Jig/Dead Stick/Slip Bobber Set-Up, mainly because it has worked for us so many time when we are on a ‘find-and-grind’.  The wild card is the Bobber hole and often times we don’t put it down or we don’t have a chance to put it down.  If we are in an active fish area, we won’t have the time to set it up, the bobber goes down only when we feel the fish have gone negative and we need it.

We are only going to go to the dead sticks when a fish has risen all the way to the lure.  We have the dead sticks raised high enough so that we can distinctively see the separation between the bottom and the lure.  Most of the time we aren’t getting hits while the lure is dead and it has to be jigged a little after the fish approaches the lure.

In the active jigging hole, we aren’t just trying to catch fish with the jigging pole, but we are trying to call fish in and hopefully they will come to one of the other lures we have down if they don’t come in to the active jigging pole.

This set-up worked lights out today!!

Good Luck out there!
