Monday DLFR Weekly Fishing Report + Today’s Take!

Today’s Take!

Steadily deeper, that seems to be the trend we are seeing over the last couple of days with the greening and further warming of the waters.  Today, we got ours in 19-25 feet of water.  We scrambled a little bit as our target areas where we had good fish going previously seemed to dry up when in fact they had just slipped to the deeper edge of the breaks instead of being up on the top sides of it.

It figures since those waters are warming greatly.

The Why?

Besides the fact that those Walleyes are searching out some more comfortable, cooler waters as the surface water temperatures are approaching the high 70’s and even eventually the low 80’s; the bug hatches that produce the bloodworms that our Walleyes really love in the mid-summer months have started to kick into high gear and those Eyes are starting to show up out in those deep mud flats cruising the mud for those tasty little morsels.

Lots And Lots Of Smalls!!

We always expect it to happen every year.  Consistent days of bigger fish turning into a project in sorting through 10-13 inch fish to finally arrive at what we are looking for.  It has finally occurred on Devils Lake.  Today, we went through about 4-5 dozen worms to arrive at our final total of 12 Keeper Walleyes and 1 Perch.  That trend will continue, unfortunately, and we will have to up our worm purchases in the mornings

With the deepening trend, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we are automatically going right into those deeper regions.  We are starting our days a little earlier to avoid the extreme heat of the day and we are starting on structure, often times in 12-16 feet of water.  If we are targeting a roadbed, we will be even shallower, less than 10 feet.

We aren’t however, spending our whole day up there.  In fact, our slip deeper is happening sooner than a week ago and we are spending more and more of our day in the deeper areas.  Spending a lot of time in the 20+ foot ranges requires a bump up in Bottom Bouncer weight.  We are starting to use a lot more 1.5, 2, and even 3 ounce Bouncers now.  While I do thing the bigger bouncers do spook some fish, the necessity to keep lines separate and get our spinners down at the appropriate angle trumps the desire to keep a lower profile on the Bottom Bouncers.

Target Depths!

While it will be beneficial to start on structure, whether it be:

  • Humps
  • Points
  • Road Beds
  • Tear Drops

Spending the most of your day off the edges of breaks in deeper water is going to pay a lot of dividends going forward.  You will also start to see more Perch show up in you live wells as well.

Colors The Last Week!

Hot colors from this last week are based around Chartreuse and Whites/Silvers/Golds with White Stripes.

Good Luck out there!
