Wednesday Weekly Ice Conditions: Episode 12- January 24th

Let’s Us Preface This Post By Telling You:

NO ICE IS SAFE ICE!

However!

We will tell you what we are doing and what we have experienced and let you decide for yourself how to proceed.  We have experienced ice that is now pretty uniform and are driving everywhere that we have been over the last week and a half.  One more cold snap and we will be hooking on extensions.  Almost all of the problem areas that we were experiencing before have now caught up and we are drilling in to 22-27 inches of ice.

The snow that we did have has been knocked down by our last warm spell.  There are still quite a few drifts out there and they have now gotten hard enough to cause everything in your truck to be thrown all over the place.  They are not hard enough yet to park on top of.  If you are approaching a sizable drift, do not try to stop on it, in the words of Mike “Spider” Schell:

Give It The Onion!!

Pressure Ridges and Bridges

The only remaining troubles to experience out there would be pressure ridges and bridges.  We stay away from them for the most part.  The bridge areas never do get good, solid ice as there is quite a bit of current moving through them.  Please, do not get too close and for the love of all things holy, even if on foot or ATV, DO NOT TRY TO GO UNDERNEATH THEM!

There are some smaller pressure ridges out there that people have been driving over.  If you are going to attempt this, try to cross where someone else has crossed already.  There are a couple of massive ridges out on the main bay that are to be avoided, one just east of the towers that bisects the entire main bay, you can’t miss it.

Busy Weekend!

With the DLVFD Fishing Tournament this weekend, the ice is sure to be extremely busy.  Please be courteous and respectful of others.  If someone else is fishing where you want to fish, give them room or ask politely if they mind you being in their vicinity.  For most, ice fishing is a recreation and no one wants their day ruined by someone else’s rudeness.

For more locations, go to our "Waypoints Catalog" where you will find every ice fishing location from this ice fishing season.

Good Luck Out There!
