Monday Ice Fishing Report- Chapter 11: January 22nd

Deep Fishing Is One of Our Favorite Periods On The Big Devil

DEEP!

In one word, that can sum up where one should be looking right now for those Perch schools.  Thirty feet of water or deeper is where most of the Perch out on the Big Devils are coming from.  Our best perch fishing the last week has been in the magic numbers of 36-39 feet of water.  The mornings have been significantly better than the mid day and afternoons.  The schools still seem to be very mixed as the first fish will be a 12 incher and the very next one out of the hole will be a 6 incher.  Makes for a dilemma when fishing that deep as those deep water fish aren’t going to survive the pressure change.

The above two waypoint offerings were still producing fish as of the last two days.

Mixed School

We were able to locate a mixed school of fish today in 28 feet of water.  The weather and conditions weren’t optimal and the fog the last two days has put a hamper on the amount of light that is getting down tot he fish.  We will be exploring this mixed bag school as we marked A LOT of fish that were docile.  Definitely some Perch and Crappie mixed in with the hyperactive White Bass.

A minnow head on a gold buckshot was our choice of lure today and it really got those whitey’s going, the Crappie marks were a little less active and that has us excited for the next two days as they have to feed sometime and we are going to make sure that we are there for when they do.  If you have ever had the pleasure of experiencing a Crappie feeding frenzy on Devils lake, it is truly awe inspiring.

Walleyes

Lot of these coming out of the lake right now.  Only problem is, most are in that 6-12 inch range.  It seems like those 2 and 3 year old fish are everywhere and in every depth.  Even out into that 40+ foot range.  If you are looking for some keeper Walleyes though, either head north to the feeder lakes or look for structure in shallow, less than 15 feet of water.

Good Luck out there!!

  1. Caught quite a few 12 and under on Dry lake last weekend. I have never caught those small eyes out there before. I guess it’s a double edge sword.
