WOW, What A Week For Perch!
Relatively Shallow!
Normally, we think about beginning our Perch search we look at numbers in the upper 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s when it comes to feet of water. This past week such was not the case. Sure, there were a lot of fish coming out of that 30+ range. However, most of ours were in that 15-22 feet of water. Depths we normally think of as Walleye depths.
There were some flurries that were just absolutely astounding. Pulling 20 keepers through the ice in just under an hour is something everyone should have the pleasure of experiencing at least once in their lives, it is exhilarating.
Gold, The Color That Rules Devils Lake!
Gold was the ticket all week, we tried some others but none of them got the reaction that the color gold did. These Perch schools were in frenzies when that Gold Varmint approached the bottom. Rocketing up to meet the lure as it entered the zoom.
If you are coming to the Big Devil to try your luck, make sure that you have every lure you own in ‘Gold’, trust me!
The last two days with this abrupt temperature change, the frenzied bite has waned a little. With tomorrow being the 3rd day of the warm front though, we expect that to turn with a cold front coming in on Thursday. I would say that Tuesday and Wednesday could be really good days to be on the ice.
For the locations of last weeks Perch bite, go to the Waypoints Catalog and access them from there!
Some Walleyes Too!
We spend the majority of our time chasing Perch in the winter, however, when they go negative; like they have been the last two days we aren’t so Perch snobbish that we won’t turn our attention to a good Golden Hour Walleye bite.
These eaters were on the prowl this evening and we had 3-4 fish stacked below us in 21-22 feet of water. They were almost fighting each other to get to our lure 1st.
Good Luck Out There!
