Caution Is Still Required BUT Fishable Ice Is Here!
One thing to keep in mind, it’s early. Really early. Unheard of ice fishing early. I know I have never been taking routine trips out onto the ice. this early in November. So, some restraint and caution is needed.
Some issues going on up here right now in that the best fishable ice is on the Northern Feeder lakes. Catch 22 there is that the Northern Feeder lakes all froze right after 3 30+ MPH wind events. The 3 we have been on:
- Lake Alice
- Lake Irvine
- Mike’s Lake
are all dirty, really dirty. Can’t see the bottom of a 6 inch hole dirty.
We just got in from Mike’s Lake and had 8 inches of ice. We also only MAYBE marked 1 fish. It is going to take some time to settle those sediments.
We started out the morning on Lake Alice and this is what we managed. Marked a few others. Got these two to bite, mainly due to the Tundra Tackle lighted lures we were using. Without them, I really don’t think we would have had any takers. If you are going to come up over the next week, I strongly suggest you go to Scheel’s or Gerrell’s Spots Center of Devils Lake and make sure you have a few of these Tundra Tackle lures. Send out a beacon in that muddy water.
The Main Lake
Most of it is still open. We were able to fish the northern end of one of the finger bays today. There was some UGLY ice, all broken up and jigsawed. It was actually pretty thick under those jags, 5-6.5 inches. The 2nd and 3rd freeze though are way too thin yet. The good news is the water clarity seems to be much better. We marked a few fish but no takers. Back at it tomorrow.
Good Luck Out There!
