DLFR Migration Report 2017 Vol. 4

Birds Come And Go…..The Goal Stays The Same!

With the Full Moon last week, the loss of some of our local ducks, and strong southerly winds keeping a bird push at bay, hunting up on the Northern Tier was pretty tough for the field hunters the end of last week into Sunday.  The wind finally switched a little and the moon dimmed some, coming out of its full phase, and we are seeing more birds flying in the morning as of today.

Last evening there was a push of snow geese migrating in and along with them came some flocks of new ducks as well.

Seeing A LOT of little ‘Cacklers’ and many groups of Swans as well.  There hasn’t been a huge push of Snow Geese as of yet but we will slowly see their numbers climb over the next 8-10 days.

Lots of Soybeans being harvested right now and that means that many of the birds will be feeding in the bean fields until the corn harvest begins.   This means that the biggest hurdle will be finding adequate cover.  The toughest part about hunting beans has always been trying to hide the hunters.

The Crane numbers remain pretty stable so that means that we aren’t losing ALL of our birds and mild weather means that many of the birds that are here right now will being staying for awhile.

One good cold front to the North and we will just be adding to those numbers.  Tag to that the fact that we have a NW and N wind over the next few days and we expect to see new birds showing up over the next couple of days.

We are still seeing coots and mourning doves as well so that means that the massive bird exodus hasn’t killed our local numbers yet.
