Tuesday Summer Water Conditions Report #2

The Good Lord Said ‘Ask And You Shall Receive’

Temps We Have Seen

We were on the Northwest end on Saturday and Monday and we saw 62-65 degree water and the fish were active.  Saw 64-67.8 degree water on the east end today and the BIG fish were active.  We asked last week for someone to turn on the hot water heater, the big guy upstairs graciously obliged and we are into full-swing, summer fishing.  We had two 5+ pound follow-ups today and all of our eyes were 18 inches or bigger.  With this warming trend of the water, the main lake fishing is where we want to see it.

Clarity

We haven’t run into too much ‘gin clear’ water this year and in my opinion that is a good thing.  Visibility these past few days has been very good for ‘catching’.  We were able to see follow-ups and the shadows of approaching fish but the water wasn’t so clear that the boat was spooking fish.  The wind events of the past few weeks created a few mud areas but for the most part, as of this writing, the clarity of most areas on the big lake are VERY favorable for catching fish.

Weed Beds

Growth is definitely occurring out there.  The cattails are green and lush and the grassy weed beds are starting to make their appearance.  A couple of spots that we usually hit pretty hard on the east end today were tough to pitch into because of so many grassy weeds.  It’s those weeds that are going to be holding a lot of fish and the Perch are going to be attainable at their edges very shortly.

We haven’t seen too much mossy gunk since one day two weeks ago in Howard’s Bay so that is a good thing.

Weekly Opinion From Yours Truly

When opportunity knocks, you must grab it.  Don’t ever, ever balk at an opportunity.

I wasted way too many years of my life simply existing and basically treading water, going nowhere.

DO NOT MAKE THAT SAME MISTAKE.

Take it from someone who is 42 and basically starting over, grab every opportunity that presents itself.

Life is too short, way too short.  This world has two types of people, those who DO and those who DON’T.  Be a DOER.  So many times in my life I balked when I should have grabbed.

The idea for DLFR goes all the way back to 2011.  I truly wish I would have acted on it at that time.  This journey has  been the time of my life and I kick myself for wasting 5 years of sitting on a concept that would be so enjoyable.

A couple years ago I had another opportunity to attempt to turn my passion into my work and I balked at that as well.  Two wasted years.

Time: The most valuable thing to man, as, it cannot be replaced.

I had another opportunity Sunday to do something that I have always wanted to be able to experience and that was go up in a plane and fly over the family farm to witness from the air the devastation to my ancestral farmland the rising waters of Devils Lake have caused.

MOST of that water, shouldn’t be there.

My significant other surprised me with the opportunity to fly with her father, Dan Ness of Farmers Union Insurance of Devils Lake.  I am not afraid of flying, heights yes, flying no.

I had to jump at the opportunity.

Saying no would only put me back into the ‘those that DON’T’ category.

Where I grew up, always considered HOME!

As we lifted off and headed Northwest, the azure haze was the first thing that struck me.  So much water and as far as the eyes could see.  If you are ever presented with the opportunity to go up and see the Lake Region from the air, grab it.  It is truly a humbling and staggering experience.

We call it the Pridelands, my little slice of heaven come September and October!

That goes for everything else in your life as well.  If an opportunity arises, JUMP, there is always tomorrow to reflect, but opportunity doesn’t always present itself twice and every missed opportunity is one that you may never get back.

Good Luck Out There!

  1. In your experience.. was Black Tiger fishing as good as those northern feeder lakes? We went there on Saturday and didn’t have much luck. Water temps were about 60

    1. It was on Tuesday, really warm water in the back bay we were in. I think if you get into some of the back bays you can get that 65-70 degree water.
