Depth and Temperature- Vital Variables

The Two Most Important Variables At This Time Of Year

We cannot stress to you enough the importance of the correlation between:

Catching Fish>>>>>>>Water Temp/Depth

If you are wandering around out there in 12 feet and then 15 feet and then 25 feet and then back to 22 feet and then 10 feet, well, you are just not going to be catching any Walleyes.

Sure, you might be like us last Monday and hook into a straggler in 39 feet of water but you are not going to be consistently pulling in Walleyes.  Maybe some Pike, but not much else.

The 90%/10% rule is in effect and that 10% of the water is under 5 feet in depth.  I would say less than 3 feet but we did pick up a few Walleyes on the outside spinners Saturday and Sunday so Ill include that depth.

The shallows are going to warm up the fastest.  In fact, it is happening right now.  The northern lakes are in the zone and the big water shorelines will be approaching it probably by this weekend.

What Are You Looking For

Aside from just shallow water, because any old 1-3 foot stretch is not necessarily going to have fish, we are looking for anything on the shoreline that is going to increase the water temperature:

  1. Weeds
  2. Rocks
  3. Sunken Roads
  4. Rip Rap
  5. Trees/Standing and Downed

All of those things are going to positively effect the speed at which the water warms and therefore are going to be holding more active fish than the surrounding areas.

Hit those spots with Crank Baits when the water gets into that 59-62 degree range right now and you will find Walleyes that are a little more active.  As the spring turns to summer, obviously that target temperature is going to rise, but for this week, if you can find low 60 degree water you will find active eyes.

Good Luck Out There!

Hold On To Your Rod…

And…

CATCH MORE FISH!!
