Busy Weekend in the Lake Region
It’s like Christmas a month after Christmas! The 33rd annual Devils Lake Volunteer Fire Department fishing tournament and raffle is this weekend, Saturday, January 28th. It is always a very festive occasion here in the Lake Region. Whether it is 30 below or 30 above, thousands of anglers will take to South Six Mile Bay to try to win Pick up, or ATV, or Hardshell fish house, or thousands of dollars in cash.
The whiffle ball rectangle of holes they drill is a sight to see in and of itself. We have actually gone out and fished it twice. It is something we recommend you do at least once in your life just to experience it.
We are Perch and Walleye hunters so we no longer partake in the event, we are usually busy drilling holes ourselves on other parts of the lake.
Just the event itself though brings thousands to Devils Lake and the ice is usually a little busier in all parts of the lake.
The part we get excited for is the raffle. Anytime you have a snowballs chance to win some of the awesome prizes it is cause for excitement.
I have bought tickets for I don’t know how long and have never won, but one of these years, one of these years I’m gonna win something.
It is kind of like our once in a lifetime moose, elk, and bighorn lottery; one of these times my name HAS to come up. Then it doesn’t, and I am left with that ‘always next year feeling.
The Bars around the lake region will be packed and all eyes will be on the local access channel around 7 PM Saturday night.
Good Luck to all the anglers that decide to fish it, the weather is suppose to be mild temperature wise but the wind might make things a bit nippy.
To all of you other anglers that are in town for the festive weekend but are going to try your luck on other parts of the lake, good luck too!
