No Eyes, But Two Other Species!

Finished up without Spring Snow season on Friday, got the flu on Saturday (may or may not have been the bird flu ;)), weather kept us off the water from Monday through Wednesday but we got back to what we love to do today.
It is evident that the spawn for Walleyes and Pike is either done or at the tail end as all the Pike were spawned out. Walleyes may or may not still be doing their thing, because they weren’t in the process of feeding today. That one is a tricky one as with the up and down weather we have had lately, they are probably very on/off trying to do what come naturally. We still have quite a bit of current so there still should be some that haven’t dropped their eggs yet.
Expect a little bit of a pause after they are done. There is always a short dormant period after they do their thing and we are either mid- or post- spawn right now.
Water temps today were chilly, 46-49 degrees in the shallows so it is going to take a little bit for them to get back to feeding.
Some significantly warmer weather on the horizon so I expect things to pick up considerably over the next week.
Whitey’s
These are always overlooked when it comes to Devils Lake and it seems like the only ones that rabidly chase them are the SE Asians. I think that is a gross oversight by many avid anglers cause they are a heck of a battle on the long rod and once the red meat is trimmed, they make great chowder. If cleaned right, they are also decent fried. I like to call them the ‘other white meat’.
The Coulees Aren’t Done Yet!
There are still Shore fishing opportunities to be had in the Basin and up in the channels of the Northern feeder lakes, while some of those fish have spawned, there are still some left that will be willing to bite, only way to find out is to get out there!
Good Luck out there!
