Wednesday Weekly Ice Conditions: Act 3!

Making Ice

About To Make A Lot More!

Starting Saturday, this area was just touching 4 inches.  Today it touched 6, 2 inches in 96 hours, not terrible.  That rate of ice thickness is about to be put into fast forward, and with clean ice for the most part, our ice sheet is about to be put into overdrive.

I feel confident in driving ATV starting Friday in most areas and am 100% confident in walking everywhere except for the bridges right now.

Be Careful Right Now

Not All Ice Is Uniform Out There

I have witnessed a couple of SnoBears out on the main lake the last couple of days and to be totally honest with you, it is our opinion that it is nothing but irresponsible and dangerous.

I guide out of a SnoBear, the false confidence of some is truly troubling.  The idea that ‘they float’ isn’t enough for me to brazenly take one out on ice that isn’t theoretically thick enough.  One is just asking for disaster when doing this.  With that being said, I am guessing that by Saturday or Sunday, with night time temperatures dipping below zero, by the weekend it will be time.  It just takes one mistake and one thinner area to make an enjoyable fishing day on the ice into a disaster.  Always error on the side of safety when it comes to ice, especially early ice.

Good Luck out there!

  1. Was wondering if you still provide tag along , follow you out fish on our own? Or possibly set up guide trip?

    1. We do, offer both but push you towards either the follow or the snobear trips, they are the most productive. Mobility is key on Devils Lake.
