Get This Question All The Time
After a couple day warm spell:
Is the ice still safe?
People, a two- or three-day warm-up in mid-January is really going to have not much effect on 24 inches of ice. If it was a week and a half or two weeks of way above freezing, I can see it being an issue, 2-3 days of mid 30-degree temps is going to have almost zero negative effect on our ice sheet. To suggest otherwise is absolutely absurd.
That being said, there may have been some shifting of our ice sheet along some pressure ridges but that is about all. With this next cold snap, I am guessing that we are going to start to see almost 30 inches in the western portions of the lake and extensions are going to be needed.
Perch fishing has picked up a little, albeit marginally but in turn the Walleye fishing has kind of taken a downturn. If we lose the Walleyes, we are going to be in deep trouble as they have kind of been our lifeline.
Stay tuned…
Good Luck out there!
