With A Blanket Of Fluff…
No Better Way To Celebrate But To…..
Rip Em
With a large snow event like we had the previous week, we never really know how the fish are going to react. Sometimes it has very little effect, other times is just shuts them down and totally changes their behavior. The two days since the snow, we have had mixed results. Yesterday, we had fish that were pretty lethargic, and we had to really work at them to get them to bite, and then there was today.
Initially, we were just marking a few fish and even then, they weren’t really fired up and hardly anything would get a reaction. As the sun hot higher and more light was coming in, things started to change a little bit. While we never had constant fish on the screen, as the light came up, the ones we were marking were starting to get very active.
In deeper water, like we were in, a little bit of light can make a lot of difference. There were still periods when they wouldn’t really react to anything, but when they got active, they were coming up and charging our lures. The snow is going to be problematic, but at least we know that when there are fish around, we have a chance.
Yesterday, back in 20ish feet of water, caught some real nice fish, just now the mother lode!! They were sluggish and getting a reaction out of them was an ordeal. Don’t get me wrong, I will take 19 jumbo’s pretty much any day of the week.
Having days where we can’t really get on the ice and just have to let the snow and the storm blow over, we get really frustrated. I don’t do well with down time, but it gave me a chance to switch over to ice waypoints. I have started to wipe my open water digits at the end of summer and put just a few of the important spots back on to my winter chart. It seems to really clean out a lot of clutter. Yeah, there are always going to be spots that we are going to go to over and over again but cleaning the slate a little bit has definitely helped me be a better fisherman.
Good Luck out there!
