Cold Fronts And High Winds!
The weather saying up here has always been:
Don’t like the weather? Just wait 5 minutes!
Well, we went from absolutely beautiful weather for the Memorial Day weekend, to be followed by wind, cold, and more wind. There was actually a chance of snow for a short time on Monday evening. Along with these cold and wind events this early in the season, comes a drop in water temperature and a slowing down of fish activity.
Don’t get me wrong, they are still going to feed, they just won’t be as active and fish that were starting to really hit plastics and starting to chase crankbaits are going to revert back to hitting mainly bobbers. We have another wind event tomorrow that will probably either keep most off the water altogether or chase most boats off of the lake by 11. It is something that we have become accustomed to dealing with up here on the northern tier.
Water Temps!
Over the weekend we were starting to hit the mid- and even hi- sixties. While the water temperatures weren’t starting the day out at those levels, they were significantly higher than we had been seeing. We took a trip to the east side in search of the warmest water and some Pike today and we found just about exactly what we thought we would find. Pretty cold water, 54-56 degrees and after the 40 mph gusts yesterday, we found a lot of muddy water as well. This cold front is going to kick off a little bit of a cool trend over the next week so water temperatures aren’t going to recover as quickly but with plenty of sun, they will still get there. Expect slip bobbers to continue to be on fire and the primary mode that will put the most Walleyes in the boat.
Water Clarity!
While we were east today, we saw some waters that were ok for pitching, a little stained but clear enough to see 2-3 feet. When we got real shallow in a couple of back bays though it was pure mud. This happens a lot up here after major wind events like we had yesterday and it’ll take a day or two for that mud to settle. With another wind event again tomorrow, expect some shallow areas to remain relatively muddy.
Lake Elevation!
Impressive spike there, obviously we still have quite a bit of water coming into the basin and I think we can be pretty safely say that she is going to hit 1451 for sure.
Weed Growth!
Just starting to see some green shoots amongst those brown cattails and we pulled some grass off of our lures today so some wee growth is occurring. With this late Spring, we are going to see less weed growth than we would be used to for this time of year. With more warm weather and some hearing waters, I am pretty confident that we will see some increased weed and cattail growth over the next week.
Good Luck out there!
