Fishing Report and Ie Conditions
ALL IN ONE!!
But First:
The walleye action was fast and furious this morning and Wonderbread Buck Shots with minnow heads was the ticket. Those front 7 are STUDS!! Not 10.55’s but extreme quality fish nonetheless. The Perch that bit were aggressive, we marked a ton that wouldn’t bite but when one decided to do it, THEY DID IT! Biting minnow heads with a couple coming on Spikes.
Today was a deep water day for the most part and we are seeing more and more Walleyes in 20+ feet of water. Also starting to see more schooled up Perch instead of scattered pods. Signs of good things to come if you ask me.
The ‘BITE’ Lately!
I think you could say that the bite is picking up just a little bit. Not what we saw at the very start of the season when it seemed like we were finding Gold Mines all over, but getting better.
Biology is taking over and after this cold snap this week, the weather looks like it is going to get steady and that is good for the stretch run. If you want to brave the elements the next 4 days, we have some starting points to take some random searching out of the equation:
Target Depths?? You Ask!
This is a tough one, cause quite frankly, depending on where you are; you gotta basically cover all depths. There are fish just scattered all over the place when it comes to the depths. There are quality Perch being caught in 15-23 feet and good Eyes being caught in 30+. The last 4 good days we have had we have been in 9-51 feet of water. Makes the search part tough and time consuming but it makes the discovery of a new school even sweeter!!
Lure Selection?
We are starting every search and initial drop with Buck Shots and Varmints. While I would normally start the mornings off with 1/4 ounce lures thinking Walleyes first, we have downsized to 1/8 ounce buck shots reason being, just because we are shallower targeting Walleyes in the morning, there is just as good a chance we will land on some Jumbo Perch instead.
Pinks, Wonderbread, and Gold Varmint are out go-to’s right now.
Ice Conditions!
Um, we’re good!!
No need to message us anymore about whether or not the ice is good. Closing in on 30 inches real quick, only thing to worry about out there is getting on the ice sheet at the accesses and staying away from the drifts. Pelican and some parts east have snowed in accesses that are ‘tracks only’ until someone plows the access.
Otherwise, I would be confident with wheeled travel on a large portion of the lake.
With 28-30 inches of ice and a week of below zero temperatures, I think it is safe to say that we will be fishing well into the end of March and quite possibly April as well.
Good Luck out there!
