Low Fishing Pressure = Active Fish
The late, late ice this year had a lot of fisherman very leery this year and rightfully so. We too were very cautious this year with ice conditions. Now though, things are shaping up quite nicely and we are finally getting that sold base and there is little to no snow on most of the lake.
That means that more areas are opening up to be accessible, this also means that there are going to be start to be a lot more fishermen out there as well. This cold snap is pretty much just what the doctor ordered to finish off our ice base and allow us to start using ATV’s. Some have done so already, especially on those Northern Feeder lakes We are always real cautious when it comes to going out with any type of vehicle and plan to use our Saturday, we will walk out one more day tomorrow.
One optimistic thing about still walking out is that a lot of the early ice perch spots are in shallower water and are easily accessed by foot. Don’t get me wrong, driving a half mile to a spot is a lot easier than walking a half mile to a spot but that water is COOOOOLLLDDDD!!!
Structure, Trees, And Depressions are always our favorite early ice locales and that hasn’t changed as every spot we have fished so far has had one of those 3 involved.
Orange Is The New Gold!!
We will always have at least 1 Gold Varmint tied up; Gold has always, always been a Devils Lake mainstay color. Our last two trips our onto the ice it was orange based colors that got us almost all of our fish, on Wednesday it was almost exclusively that Scheels Exclusive one above. Going forward we are still going to go back to Gold, still going to drop that Gold Varmint down, but there will always be periodic colors that out fish it, right now it seems to be orange based.
Tuesday it was these 3 that landed our fish for us!
2 Silver Memberships!
2 of these remaining!
Good Luck out there!
