Snow Goose Push!
We have been plagued here, in the Lake Region, with a predominant Southerly Weather Pattern. Brisk winds from the South and the Southwest has pretty much stalled any major bird movements causing the birds that we do have here to become quite ‘stale’. The lack of new blood has many of the birds in a lazy, non-morning feeding pattern. Lack of any measurable precipitation has left us with lots of soybeans in the fields that are dry. The ducks and geese still eat them but when they head back to water for a drink, that is when the beans swell. Could be an explanation as to a lack of morning feeding.
Cooler temps on the way and a start to the corn harvest might save us a little.
The winds today also switched to the Northwest and for periods of time today it was a gale. The next two days appear to consist of winds out of the North and Northwest as well.
Scouting tonight there was a definite increase in Snow Goose numbers and it also appeared that there are a few more ducks. Seeing a lot more Widgeon and Gadwall in the sloughs and fields and a lot more divers showing up as well. This is usually an indicator of a migratory push form the North. Not peak migration but getting better. Hopefully that produces a more consistent pattern of morning feeding by our fowl feathered friends.
Walleye Fishing?!
The Walleye fishing on Devils Lake has picked up considerably and trolling the shallows, jigging the bridges and rock piles, or pitching shorelines will all produce Walleyes at this time. If you venture out, watch the weather, the fall weather systems can come up quick and no fish is worth a life. Good Luck out there on the water.
