DLFR Migration Report 2017 Vol. 5

Leading Edge Of Snows!!

Those starlit evening when you step outside onto the patio at the home farm and your ears are filled with the high pitched honk of White Devil’s navigating by night into the local roost.  Nothing brings back the days of yesteryear quite like it.  The days of Dad loading my brother and I up into the pickup with dozens of white Hi-Lex jugs, painted white, and thrown out the sides of the pick up as he chugged through the worked stubble.

Always makes me feel like a kid again.

Well, the last few nights, that sound could be heard and we have the leading edge of the Snow Migration here, in the Lake Region.

Along with that leading edge of migrating Snow Geese, comes a lot of Cacklers and some, not many, but some new ducks.  I wouldn’t say that the migration is in full swing here yet, I would say that bird numbers have expanded, even if just a little bit.  Seeing some more widgeon in flocks and, is it just me, or are some of those Drake Mallards looking just a little bigger.

I think we are far enough from the full moon now that the birds are starting to get back to a little bit of a more regular routine of feeding in the morning.  This last Full moon really screwed up some feeding schedules and there were a number of days that most of the duck just didn’t fly.  This made for some tough hunting.  As we approach the New Moon, hopefully we get back to an early morning flight schedule.

Nothing like the discovery of some Jewelry on  the legs of one f the downed birds.  It always lifts the spirits of the hunters.
