Monday Weekly Fishing Report #16-Final Regular Report of Open Water Fishing

Never Forget!!

September 11th, 2001!

That date will live on in American history as the day that we lost our innocence.  The day that we were forced to realize that we are vulnerable no matter how secure we imagine ourselves to be.  There are dates in history when EVERYONE remembers where they were when the historical event took place.

The Challenger explosion… The Liberation of Kuwait and Desert Storm….9-11

Isn’t it ironic that most of those monumental dates are all bad.

There are some though that stick out that are good as well.  The older generation, I think, all remember where they were when the 1980 USA Hockey Team shocked the world.  I know exactly where I was and what I was doing both times the Twins won the World Series, both in 1987 and in 1991.

If the Vikings ever get to the Super Bowl and win it I will remember that moment into infinity, I’m not holding my breath though.

Kidding aside, on this 16th anniversary of 9-11, say a prayer to all of those that lost their lives, and a prayer for those that lost something, and a prayer for all of us that lost our security that day.

On To Fishing!

As the days get shorter and the mornings get a little cooler, our thoughts and time turn to chasing feathers.  Don’t get me wrong, we aren’t putting the boat away, but out of necessity and the desire to pay bills, 90% of our attention and time will be turning to chasing feathers instead of fins.  We will still be making sporadic trips out onto the water, but for the most part, our mornings will be spent in the decoys and our afternoons will be spent scouting and that just doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for the boat.

When we are able to squeeze a few hours out onto the water, we WILL bring that report to you but for regular Monday Fishing Reports, this will be the final one of the Open Water season.

Much The Same

The bite hasn’t totally turned around but it has improved.  There are still A LOT of smaller Walleyes and White Bass biting right now and you can expect to catch a lot of fish.  There are bigger fish to be had and some quality is starting to show back up after we went through our little transition period.

These came from 20-25 feet of water pulling bottom bouncers and spinner and pulling lead core with #5 Salmos.

We caught a lot of little ones but there were a few sporadic keepers present.

We also talked to some that were finding a lot of nice cleaners in 12-18 feet of water pulling spinners.  The water has kind of turned over and, while still a little green, it isn’t that late summer muck that we had 2 weeks ago.  That fall fishing bite that everyone is waiting for is in its infancy and there is some really good fishing to be had over the next month/month and a half.

What Occupies Our Hours

If you are a reader of this webpage and have followed us for a little over a year now, we thank you, and you know that we are Waterfowl Fanatics.

When fall comes around, feathers and ‘webbed feet down’ occupy the thoughts of our cognitive hours.

We had a contributor tell us that we should change our name to ‘Devils Lake Game Report’, and maybe that would be more accurate, but we will keep it the same.  I like the ring of ‘Devils Lake Fishing Report’, and aside from about two months in the fall, we are all about fishing Devils Lake.

We have 4 more days of Early Canada Goose hunting ahead of us, then Cranes opens Saturday as does our 2-day youth hunt.  My 8-year old son is hoping to down his first duck on Saturday, we will keep you posted.

The following weekend is our Resident Only General Waterfowl Opener and then the Big Daddy of them all, the Non-Resident Waterfowl Opener.

It seems empty to leave Monday’s without a general report, so we won’t do that, next week we will come to you with our first ever:

Monday Migration Report!

We will give you weekly updates as to what we are seeing out there.  What new species are showing up and what duck and goose numbers are like.

Happy Customers!

Had these two our on Saturday, we had to avoid the wind a little but it did calm down and we were able to boat 6 nice keepers and a bonus perch.
